The destination

You’ll fit right in

On South Africa’s warm east coast lies KwaZulu-Natal – the land of hills and waves, rhinos and whales, and mountain dragons… allegedly.

Because it sits south of the equator, the seasons are reversed: summer starts in December, and winter never quite commits. The waves are forgiving here. The ocean is Indian. Which means swim-friendly, unlike the Atlantic on the other side.

KwaZulu-Natal is a tight braid of cultures and flavours.

One day here holds enough to keep you dreaming for years.

It all starts at King Shaka International, half an hour up the coast from Durban, the region’s biggest city also known as the curry capital of South Africa. From there, everything is within reach.

Whatever you’re after, there’s a ready-to-go itinerary for it. Scroll on and see what sounds like you.

Which one sounds like you?

Durban — the city of three worlds: the beachfront promenade and skyline

Summer by default

The current of the Indian Ocean keeps this stretch of coast warm year round. It’s a pleasant contrast to the Atlantic side of South Africa, where swimming is more of a dare.

A swirl of cultures

Durban was built as a port, drawing Zulu, Indian and British into one space. And it shows. Three worlds met here and built the city’s layered and generous identity.

A workout for all your senses

Flip-flops and drums, milkshakes and grills, spices and sunblock, saris and beadwork, and vendors calling out their prices. It takes a while to work out what you’re looking at or hearing. Or tasting.

The best curry outside India

Taste fire in a hollowed-out half-loaf of bread and call it lunch. Legendary bunny chow could only have happened here, at the crossroads of three cultures. And the same is true of most of what you’ll have in Durban.

The Fairways Golf / Coast / Leisure

Three nights at The Oyster Box in Umhlanga – Zulu for “place of the reeds” – in a sea-facing room, bed and breakfast. One day goes to Durban with a car and guide. The next goes to 18 holes at Zimbali Lakes, green fees and cart included, laid out between the lakes and the sea. The halfway house runs pay-as-you-go, so bring the card you actually use.

02

The Footprints Safari / Wildlife / Bush

On day four you drive north to Manyoni Private Game Reserve, which began life as a WWF project to give black rhino room to breed. Four nights at Rhino Sands Safari Camp: all meals, local wines and spirits, two game drives a day. A camp this small doesn’t do crowds. Four nights in one place is long enough to stop counting animals and start recognising them.

Three nights at The Oyster Box in Umhlanga, sea-facing, bed and breakfast. Day two is yours, with a shuttle to Gateway running all day. Day three is 18 holes at Zimbali Lakes, green fees and cart included. Play it properly – it’s the last place on this trip with a dress code.

02

Track 3 nights

Then three nights at &Beyond Phinda Mountain Lodge: Big Five, seven distinct habitats in one reserve, and a pair of Swarovskis waiting in the room. Drives twice a day, and walks on foot with an armed tracker, which is a different thing entirely – at ground level the bush stops being scenery.

The road to Thonga Beach Lodge runs out; the last leg is 4x4 through the dune forest. Three nights full board on the Maputaland coast, with guided snorkelling, kayaks and sundowners on Lake Sibaya. The Rhinos Wildlife / Conservation / Safari

Pick up your SUV at King Shaka International Airport and head north straight into Zululand. Four hours later you’re at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi. Nobody gets the name right the first time – locals will tell you shloo-shloo-wee is close enough and leave it at that. The park was set up in 1895 to stop the white rhino from disappearing. And it worked: almost every white rhino alive today descends from the handful that survived here. Three nights at Rhino Ridge, the first private lodge inside the park, on land belonging to the Mpembeni community.

Then you drive east for four hours, until the tar runs out at Sodwana Bay. You leave the rental car at a secure base and hand the last hour to someone who knows the sand. Four nights at Thonga Beach Lodge, in the coastal forest above the ocean. Rock pools a five-minute walk away, kayaks, sundowners on Lake Sibaya, an afternoon with the Mabibi community. From November to February, the turtles come up onto the sand at night – and you can go out and find them.

Wilderness & Waves

Seven nights up the Zululand coast, from the wetlands almost to the Mozambique border

7 nights
Dune forest meeting the Indian Ocean at iSimangaliso
01

The Wetlands Forest meets ocean

St Lucia is the way into iSimangaliso, where game drives run between freshwater pans and the sea. A full day crosses grassland and dune forest to Cape Vidal, where the forest stops and the beach starts – hippo, rhino and buffalo on the way in, lunch on the sand, humpbacks offshore in season. Another morning is on the estuary by boat, at eye level with hippo pods and Nile crocodiles.

Open safari vehicle on a hillside in Hluhluwe-iMfolozi
02

The Bush Track the wild

Then inland to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi, proclaimed in 1895 and the reason the southern white rhino still exists: a century ago, they survived here and nowhere else. A full day in an open vehicle tracking the Big Five, with a guide more interested in reading the landscape than racing to the next sighting.

Traditional reed fish traps in the shallows of Kosi Bay
03

The Lakes Water & tradition

North again, until the bushveld turns to sand and you reach Kosi Bay – four lakes strung together by channels, ringed by raffia palms and coastal forest, opening into the Indian Ocean. A day of 4x4 tracks, snorkelling at the mouth, and the fish traps: woven reeds standing in the shallows, maintained by families for generations. The last night is back south on the Durban coast.

Durban: Stories & Spice

South Africa’s third city, and its curry capital

3 nights
Warwick Junction market in Durban Ceramic artist at work at Ardmore Friends sharing curry dishes at a long table
KwaMuhle Museum colonnade
01

The City Arrival day

Your guide meets you at King Shaka, and the route starts where Durban started – the Golden Mile, the beachfront promenade the city grew along, and the working harbour behind it. Then the route turns inland. KwaMuhle Museum occupies the building where the municipality once dictated where Black residents could live and work; the exhibitions are about that building as much as about the city.

Spice stall at Victoria Street Market
02

The Markets Full day

A full day at Warwick Junction. Thousands of traders run an economy the formal city never quite absorbed: traditional medicine, produce, beadwork, and the commuter crowds moving through all of it. Then the Victoria Street Market in the old Indian Quarter, settled by the families who came in the 1860s – turmeric, cardamom, and masala blends weighed out by the scoop. At midday, the schedule pauses for the prayer service and a vegetarian lunch at the Hare Krishna Temple of Understanding.

Phoenix Settlement in the Inanda Valley
03

The Legacy Last morning

The last morning goes inland to Inanda. Gandhi founded Phoenix Settlement in 1904; it was here he worked out what non-violent resistance would mean. A few kilometres on is Ohlange, the school founded by John Dube, first president of the organisation that became the ANC. Mandela voted here in 1994, then walked over to stand at Dube’s grave.

9 nights
Garden-to-table lunch in the Midlands
01

The Midlands 3 nights

Your guide meets you at King Shaka International and drives you inland, to Fordoun Hotel & Spa – a family-run estate near Nottingham Road with roots in the 1800s. Three nights, breakfast daily, spa package included. Then: African storytelling in clay at Ardmore Ceramics, the gardens at Brahman Hills, and a long table at Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse, where Richard Poynton picks the garden minutes before it reaches your plate.

Game drive past giraffes in Nambiti
02

The Bush 3 nights

On day four, the table gives way to the wild. Lions Valley Lodge sits in Nambiti Private Game Reserve: malaria-free Big Five country, the Drakensberg on the horizon. Three nights, three meals a day, two open-vehicle drives. Everything between them is unscheduled.

Dinner on the balcony at The Oyster Box
03

The Coast 3 nights

The Oyster Box, Umhlanga beachfront, bed and breakfast. Three nights that ask nothing of you except one dinner: the curry buffet that made this hotel a landmark.

A 4x4 climbing the hairpin bends of the Sani Pass in the Drakensberg mountains

Lesotho is an independent kingdom completely surrounded by South Africa. It sits so high that the mighty Drakensberg is merely its doorstep.

The Sani Pass is the only road in from KwaZulu-Natal: a steep climb of hairpin bends that demands a proper 4x4 and a driver who knows exactly what they’re doing.

At the top, the air is thinner and colder, and hardy Basotho horsemen ride wrapped in blankets. It’s stark, wind-scoured country, beautifully indifferent to tourists.

The highest pub in Africa sits right on the edge of the escarpment, almost three kilometres above sea level. After the drive up, and before the drive down, you might need a drink.
